
Michigan Set to Host Florida Gulf Coast, Travel to Marquette

The University of Michigan women's soccer team will have play two matches this week, staring with a Friday (Aug. 30) home test against Florida Gulf Coast at 5 p.m. The contest is the front end of a U-M Soccer Stadium doubleheader with the U-M men's team, which will take on FGCU at 7:30 p.m. Following the match with the Eagles, the Wolverines will travel to Marquette for a Sunday (Sept. 1) match at 2:30 p.m. CDT for their first road match of the season.
Series History with Florida Gulf Coast
• Michigan has met Florida Gulf Coast on one other occasion, a 3-2 loss to the Eagles a season ago.
• The Wolverines got on the board first with an own goal before FGCU rattled off two goals. Sarah Stratigakis scored the equalizer, but the Eagles found the winning goal in the first half as the teams played a scoreless second half in Fort Myers.
Scouting the Eagles
• Florida Gulf Coast started the 2019 season with a 2-0 victory over Florida International before its match against Auburn was canceled due to weather.
• The Eagles have put nine of their 18 shot attempts on frame.
• Senior Majorie Boilsen scored both goals against the Golden Panthers to lead the offense while all four of her shots have been on target this season.
• In net, Melissa Weck played all 90 minutes with four saves and has not given up a goal.
Series History with Marquette
• The Golden Eagles hold a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Wolverines.
• The teams last met a year ago as Michigan earned a 3-2 victory at U-M Soccer Stadium. Juniors Nicki Hernandez and Sarah Stratigakis found the back of the net against Marquette last season, while Hernandez and Alia Martin added an assist.
• Michigan will be looking for its third win in the series and first on the road since 2001 when the Wolverines defeated Marquette, 1-0.
Scouting Marquette
• The Golden Eagles struggled out of the gate as they dropped their frist two games of the season.
• Marquette will look to score its first goal of the year when it battles Wisconsin on Thursday night (Aug. 29).
• Natalie Yass has had the most chances, with a goal and four shots while Rachel Johnson has two shots on net.
• In goal, Maddy Henry has 12 saves and a .800 save percentage after the forst week of the season.
Trio Emerges Offensively in Opening Weekend
• Junior Sarah Stratigakis notched six points, while Meredith Haakenson added five points and Raleigh Loughman had four.
• Haakenson netted her first career goal when she scored the Wolverines' first goal of the season against Marshall (Aug 22) and followed it with the final goal of the match for her first multi-point performance. The sophomore midfielder closed out the weekend with an assist on the game-winning overtime goal against Utah Valley (Aug. 25).
• Stratigakis scored one goal and added an assist in the season opener. The junior midfielder capped the weekend with her fourth career game-winning goal in overtime against Utah Valley. With and assist, it was her second straight three-point performance this season.
Defense Locks Down Early
• The Michigan defense allowed just eight shots in 93 minutes with only six reaching goal.
• Junior goalkeeper Hillary Beall picked up two wins in net, which included the shutout win against Marshall. The junior goalkeeper made five saves in two matches and allowed just one goal in the victories.
• Junior Alia Martin played a big part of the defensive success with 139 minutes played at center back.
• Sophomore Janiece Joyner also played a key role last weekend with a start and 34 minutes played against Utah Valley.
Freshmen Making an Impact
• Five freshmen made their Michigan debuts last weekend with Hannah Blake and Jayde Riviere earning a spot in the starting lineup.
• Lauren Brideau, Lily Farkas and Danielle Wolfe all came in as substitutions in the first two matches of the season.
• Wolfe was the first freshman Wolverine to earn a point this season as she scored her first career goal on a penalty kick against Marshall.
• Blake earned an assist on Raleigh Loughman's goal against Utah Valley.
