COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Meg Dowthwaite scored the game-winning goal at the 68:02 mark in overtime to propel the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 win against No. 18 Ohio State (6-5, 1-3 Big Ten) on Friday afternoon (Oct. 11) at Buckeye Turf Field. It was the Wolverines' (9-3, 3-1 Big Ten) third straight overtime win against OSU in as many seasons.
Dowthwaite's game-winner -- her second of the season -- followed off a long hit on the Buckeye 25. Senior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort fed the ball to sophomore Sofia Southam, who maneuvered past an OSU defender into the circle, split a two-on-one then laid out to poke the ball ahead toward the cage. Dowthwaite got a touch on it and chipped it through the legs of Ohio State goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez. Dowthwaite owns a share of the Michigan team lead with six goals.
After three scoreless quarters, the Wolverines struck first at the 49:28 mark when junior/sophomore Emma Tamer buried the direct shot off a penalty-corner opportunity. Sophomore Kathryn Peterson and Fernandez Lacort earned assists on the insert and stop, respectively. It was Tamer's third of the season.
The lead was short-lived as the Buckeyes responded just two minutes later, at 51:13, when Mackenzie Allessie spun out to the right of the circle and scored to the short-side corner.
Michigan largely dominated play after the first quarter, outshooting the Buckeyes, 24-4, in all and outcornering them, 10-2. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned two saves for the win, while Ohio State's Hernandez stopped 13 of Michigan's 15 shots on goal.
The Wolverines will remain in Columbus this weekend and will wrap up their road swing with a noon slate against Ball State (3-8) on Sunday (Oct. 13) at Buckeye Turf Field.
