ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan sophomore midfielder Molly Garrett has been named to the 2018 All-Big Ten women's lacrosse team, the conference announced today (Wednesday, May 2).
Garrett becomes the third Michigan student-athlete to earn all-conference honors and the first since Kim Coughlan and Madeline Dion earned distinction following the 2016 season.
Garrett was sensational at the end of the season, culminating in a stunning 12-11 victory at 16th-ranked Penn State in the season finale. The Winter Springs, Florida, native was named the Big Ten co-Player of the Week following that game after leading all scorers with four goals (on four shots), two assists and a spectacular effort causing a turnover, picking up the ground ball and assisting on the game-tying goal with six seconds remaining.
For the season, Garrett started all 17 games and logged 16 goals and two assists. She led the team with 50 draw controls and ranked among the Wolverines' leaders in ground balls (19). Seven of her 16 goals and half of her total points came in the final three games of the season.
In addition, junior goalkeeper Mira Shane also received Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Shane appeared in 12 games and started eight consecutive contests at one point in the season, collecting four victories. She recorded 69 saves with 14 coming against Maryland on March 31. She recorded a season-best .727 save percentage in a win against Detroit Mercy when she stopped eight of 11 shots in a 14-7 Michigan win.
Michigan finished its season at 7-10 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten play. The U-M Lacrosse Stadium is the site of this weekend's Big Ten Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament (May 4 & 6) with No. 1-seeded Maryland playing No. 4 Johns Hopkins and No. 2 Northwestern playing No. 3 Penn State in the semifinals.
