JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped a close non-conference matchup at Jacksonville, 14-9, on Sunday (Feb. 11) at Jacksonville's D.B. Milne Field.
Junior attacker Adriana Pendino recorded her second hat trick in as many games, leading U-M on the offensive end with three goals. On the defensive end, junior Casey Cummo had a team-high three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior goalie Mira Shane entered the game with 2:38 to go in the first half and finished with seven saves -- all in the second half. Sophomore Molly Garrett won a team-high six draw controls to finish the weekend with a team-leading 13 draw controls.
Sophomore attacker Lilly Grass put the Maize and Blue on the board first at the 27:38 mark, as she drew a shooting space call and converted a free-position shot. Following a Jacksonville goal, junior attacker Maddie Klee capitalized on a man-up opportunity from short range to put the Wolverines in front, 2-1, with 20:42 to go in the first half.
Jacksonville and Michigan traded a pair of goals, as the Dolphins took a 3-2 lead before freshman midfielder Maggie Kane and Pendino scored on free-position attempts to make it 4-3, U-M, at the 16:50 mark.
Jacksonville then scored three straight goals, forcing Michigan to call timeout with 2:38 left in the half. Shane came on to replace starting goalie, junior Alli Kothari, at the timeout. The Dolphins regained possession late in the half and were able to tally their fourth consecutive goal with 0.9 seconds remaining to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
Jacksonville added a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to increase its lead to five, 9-4. A caused turnover on the defensive end by junior defender Madison Richardson led to a Wolverine goal on the other end, as Klee found fifth-year senior attacker Bianca Brueckner cutting down the middle for the quick one-time goal at 21:30. Klee finished the weekend with three total assists after dishing out two against Jacksonville on Friday (Feb. 9).
With the Dolphins leading, 10-5, Pendino and sophomore midfielder Chandler Kirby tallied back-to-back goals to bring the Wolverines within three, 10-7, with 10:49 remaining. Sophomore midfielder Nadine Stewart recorded her first career assist on Kirby's goal.
Pendino completed her hat trick with 7:13 to play on an unassisted goal to make it 11-8 Jacksonville. The Dolphins closed the game on a 3-1 run to preserve their season-opening win, with Garrett scoring U-M's goal during that stretch. Garrett won the draw and went straight to the cage, scoring in just eight seconds.
The Wolverines will return to Ann Arbor to prepare for their home opener on Friday (Feb. 16), when they host Butler at 3 p.m. in their first game at the new U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
