
Michigan Women's Lacrosse Signs Seven to National Letters of Intent

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's lacrosse head coach Hannah Nielsen announced today (Wednesday, Nov. 21) the signing of the seven-person 2019 recruiting class to National Letters of Intent. The 2019 class includes four midfielders, one attacker, one defender and one goalkeeper, while the seven-person class hails from four different states.
The class of 2019 includes:
- Midfielder Caitlyn Camelio (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth)
- Midfielder Sophia DeNicola (St. James, New York/Smithtown High School East)
- Attacker Melissa Esswein (Syosset, New York/Syosset)
- Defender Maeve Heckard (North Wales, Pennsylvania/Lansdale Catholic)
- Midfielder Mariana Lopez-Ona (Princeton, New Jersey/Princeton)
- Goalkeeper Mariah Sweeney (Elverson, Pennsylvania/The Hill School)
- Midfielder Frances Workman (Chatham, New Jersey/Chatham)
"I am extremely excited to announce the signing of this 2019 class," stated Nielsen. "This is the first complete class that we as coaches have been responsible for recruiting here to Michigan, which makes it an extra special group. From top to bottom we have filled the class with well-rounded athletes who I anticipate having an immediate impact on our program and the direction we are looking to go. I am excited for the versatility that the group brings in their styles of play and, above all else, am excited to have a great group of young women and their families join our Michigan family."
Caitlyn Camelio
M/D | 5-5 | Falmouth, Maine | Club: Mass Elite
• Prepped at Falmouth High School, where she is a three-year letterwinner
• Led her team to a state championship in her junior campaign, scoring four goals in the final game and seven in the regional final
• Named Maine State All-Telegram Player of the Year, first team all-state and first team all-conference as a junior
• Chosen as team captain and won the Sportsmanship Award in her junior season
• Started every game in both her freshman and sophomore seasons
• Received the Coaches Award as a freshman and a sophomore
• A member of National Honor Society and high honor roll
• Participates in debate club
• Plays club lacrosse for Mass Elite
• Also played varsity soccer and ran both track and cross country
Sophia DeNicola
M | 5-5 | St. James, New York | Club: Long Island Yellow Jackets
• Prepped at Smithtown High School East, where she is a three-year letterwinner
• Helped her team to the state quarterfinals as a freshman and a state semifinal appearance as a sophomore
• Earned all-division honors as both a freshman and sophomore
• Scored 36 goals and had 22 assists as a freshman before scoring 39 goals and adding 24 assists as a sophomore
• Sat out her junior season due to injury
• Plays club lacrosse for the Long Island Yellow Jackets
• Helped the team to U15 National Championship in 2016
• Also plays field hockey for Smithtown High School East
Melissa Esswein
M/D | 5-3 | Syosset, New York | Club: Liberty Lacrosse
• Prepped at Syosset High School, where she is a three-year letterwinner
• Earned the Coaches Award in her freshman season, helping the team to a state championship
• Also runs cross country and track and is on the soccer team
• Was the 3,000 meters county champion and earned All-America honors in her sophomore season
• Helped the cross country team to a county championship and a state qualifier as a sophomore
• Earned the Coaches Award for the winter track season as a sophomore
• Sat out her junior season due to injury
• Is a member of National Honor Society and has been on honor roll all three years of high school
• Plays club lacrosse for Liberty Lacrosse
Maeve Heckard
M | 5-8 | North Wales, Pennsylvania | Club: Ultimate PA
• Prepped at Lansdale Catholic High School, where she is a three-year letterwinner
• Scored her 100th career goal in her junior season and had three games with eight or more goals
• Named second team All-Catholic as a junior
• Helped her team to a PCL semifinal as a sophomore
• Plays club lacrosse for Ultimate PA
• Is a four-year letterwinner on the field hockey team
Mariana Lopez-Ona
M | 5-9 | Princeton, New Jersey | Club: Ultimate NJ
• Prepped at Princeton High School, where she is a three-year letterwinner
• Is a two-time All-Colonial Valley Conference first team honoree and a two-time all-area first team honoree
• Led her team to a state championship in her junior season and a state semifinal appearance as a sophomore
• Named first team by the Trenton Times twice as well as earning Offensive Player of the Year by the Trentonian
• Surpassed 100 career goals as a sophomore and 200 career goals in her junior season
• Had a career-high 10 points with eight goals and two assists in her sophomore season
• Had a career-high 14 draw controls in her junior season
• Plays club lacrosse for Ultimate NJ
• Also plays varsity field hockey and runs track at Princeton High School
Mariah Sweeney
GK | 5-10 | Elverson, Pennsylvania | Club: Phantastix Lacrosse
• Prepped at The Hill School, where she is a three-year letterwinner
• Garnered MAPL co-MVP honors as well as All-MAPL first team in her junior season
• Named Philly Lacrosse all-area second team, National Tournament Philly Team 1, and Under Armour Underclass Philly Team in her junior campaign
• Made a career-best 18 saves and had four assists against Princeton Day School as a junior
• Earned Under Armour Underclass Command Division Philly Team and National Tournament Philly Team 4 as a sophomore
• Was a Maximum Exposure All-Star selection and a Philly Showcase NXT Outstanding Goalie selection as a freshman
• Was a Montgomery County Art Show finalist two times
• Was an honorable mention Wharton Esherick Prize winner
• Played club lacrosse for Phantastix Lacrosse
• Also plays basketball and soccer for The Hill School
Frances Workman
M | 5-7 | Chatham, New Jersey | Club: BBL Elite
• Prepped at Chatham High School, where she is a three-year letterwinner
• Named team captain for her upcoming senior season
• Notched second team all-league honors as well as second team All-Morris Country honors as a junior
• Scored a career-high four goals against Red Bank Regional as a junior
• Earned the Coaches Award as a sophomore
• Is a member of the Key Club and German Club
• Is a member of the high honor roll and the German National Honor Society
• Plays club lacrosse for BBL Elite
• Also plays varsity soccer
