ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used an offensive onslaught to secure its most dominant win of the season, cruising to a 9-0 victory over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 10) in front of 378 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Seven different Wolverine players tallied goals for Michigan, who split their tallies with five in the first half and four in the second, while junior Emma Way notched her first collegiate hat trick. Sophomore Meg Dowthwaite tallied her team-best sixth goal of the season and assists on three others.
Michigan scored three goals on its corner attack, including the game-winner just 1:15 into the contest, when senior Katie Trombetta hammered in the direct shot after it deflected off a UC Davis defender for her first goal of the season. Sophomore Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort and junior Maggie Bettez earned assists on the stop and insert, respectively.
Michigan scored its third and fourth goals just 1:22 apart midway through the opening half, as Dowthwaite netted another direct corner shot and Way knocked in her first of three off a rebound in front of the cage at the 17:06 and 18:28 marks, respectively. Sophomore Kate Walker also scored on a broken Michigan penalty late in the half, at 32:10, when Dowthwaite corralled the loose ball and whipped it toward the right post, where Walker tipped it in for the first goal of her collegiate career.
Freshman Kayla Reed established the Wolverines' momentum in the second half, at 41:28, with a beautiful reverse chip from the left side that found the top shelf of the UC Davis cage. Way scored out scoring with two more markers in the final 18 minutes of the contest -- both on redirections off of Dowthwaite passes.
Michigan outshot the Aggies, 30-1, and outcornered them, 9-0. Senior goalkeeper Sam Swenson earned one save in the first half and combined for the shutout with freshman Sidonie LaPlante, who made her collegiate debut with 20:52 remaining in the second. UC Davis goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow earned 14 saves on Michigan's 23 shots on goal.
Michigan (4-2) will open Big Ten Conference play next Friday (Sept. 15), wrapping up its five-game homestand against in-state rival Michigan State at 7 p.m. at Ocker Field. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
