BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- After tying the game in the top of the ninth with two outs to force extra innings, the No. 16-ranked University of Michigan baseball team was eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday (May 25) in a 13-inning loss to Indiana at the Hoosiers' own Bart Kaufman Field.
Michigan will now await selection to the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines have not advanced to the national tournament with an at-large bid since 2007, reaching in 2015 courtesy of winning the conference tournament. The 2017 NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Monday (May 29) at noon. It will be aired live on ESPN2.
Junior lefty Oliver Jaskie started on the mound for Michigan in the four-hour affair, tossing seven complete innings and surrendering just four hits with nine strikeouts.
After stranding two men on base in the top of the first inning, the Wolverines took the field with Jaskie on the mound in the bottom of the frame. The first out came quickly, as Indiana's leadoff man sent a fly ball deep to left field that sophomore left fielder Miles Lewis caught at the wall to rob a home run.

Though neither team scored in the first, Michigan took to the scoreboard in the top of the second inning for an early 2-0 lead. Junior Jake Bivens got things going for the Maize and Blue with a leadoff single to right field, and a stolen base quickly put him in scoring position. A deep fly out then allowed Bivens to take third, and it was sophomore Jonathan Engelmann who came up with the RBI on a base hit up the middle. One out later, a walk to sophomore Ako Thomas gave Michigan two runners on, and a ground-rule double by senior Johnny Slater allowed Engelmann to score for a two-run lead.
After retiring the first nine Indiana batters to begin the game, Jaskie surrendered the Hoosiers' first hit in the bottom of the fourth. He returned in the fifth for a perfect 1-2-3 outing before allowing the second hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth.
Indiana tied the score in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run, but the Wolverines regained the lead in the top of the eighth. Junior Drew Lugbauer got the inning started with a single to right field and quickly took second on a wild pitch. An outfield single off the bat of Bivens then allowed Lugbauer to score from second for a 3-2 lead.
The Hoosiers added two more runs in the bottom of the same inning on four hits to regain a one-run edge, but the Wolverines rallied in the top of the ninth to even the score on an RBI single from Lugbauer.
Michigan reliever Alec Rennard allowed the defense to work as the Wolverines held Indiana scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, which forced the game into extra innings.
Rennard, freshman Tommy Henry and sophomore Jack Bredeson combined to close out the 10th inning for Michigan on the mound and allowed no base runners. From there, however, the Hoosiers put a man on base in each of the next three innings.
The Wolverines also put men on base in three of the four extra innings played, but it was Indiana that eventually scored in the bottom of the 13th inning to claim the victory and eliminate Michigan from the Big Ten Tournament.
The loss is Michigan's first in extra innings this season and marks the first time U-M has been eliminated from the tournament with two straight losses since 2013. The game also set a new tournament record for time of game, at four hours and 28 minutes.
Overall, the Wolverines registered 13 hits in the effort, and Bivens led Michigan with three on the day.
The Michigan pitching staff sent eight pitchers to the mound in the loss. Through 13 innings, the group allowed just 10 hits.
