ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan baseball team scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back on Thursday (April 13), defeating the No. 18-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in the series opener by a score of 5-2 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Wolverines scored three runs in the first inning after capitalizing on five walks and one hit batter by the Sooners' starting pitcher. Oklahoma bounced back in the second inning, however, scoring one run off two singles and a hit batter but left runners stranded on first and second as Michigan starting pitcher Oliver Jaskie got out of the jam with a flyout to end the inning.
Despite a hitless first three innings for the Wolverines, sophomore Nick Poirier ended the combined no-hit bid with a leadoff single to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Poirer advanced to second later in the inning but was left stranded.
The next two innings were scoreless on both sides of the scoreboard, but junior Drew Lugbauer extended Michigan's lead to 5-1 with a two-run blast to centerfield in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Sooners answered quickly with a lead off homer over the left-field wall in the top of the sixth inning, but the score remained 5-2 in favor of Michigan as senior reliever Mac Lozer came in during the eighth and retired all five batters faced to close out the game.
Jaskie tossed a gem for the Wolverines, giving up just two runs through seven innings and allowing just five hits with seven strikeouts. The outing marks a season-high number of innings pitched for the lefty and ties his career high.
After a leadoff single in the top of the eighth, Lozer came in for relief duties and recorded a strikeout along with a double play to end the inning with nothing hurt. From there, the senior righty tossed a 1-2-3 ninth en route to his first save of the season.
