LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- On a night when runs were hard to come by, UCLA picked up a 1-0 walkoff win over the University of Michigan in college baseball action Friday night (March 3) at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
After a leadoff double by Chase Strumpf in the bottom of the ninth inning, Brett Stephens laid down a sacrifice bunt to try and move pinch-runner Jake Hirabayashi to third base. The bunt was fielded by U-M pitcher Tommy Henry, who tried to go to third base to get the lead runner, but an errant throw sent the ball into the outfield and Hirabayashi crossed home plate to give the Bruins the victory.
Michigan had its own chance to put the first run on the board in the top of the ninth. A leadoff walk by Jake Bivens and a sacrifice bunt by Miles Lewis put a runner in scoring position with one out. After another walk, UCLA brought in Brian Gadsby to get a pair of groundouts and eventually his second win of the season.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision as Michigan's Oliver Jaskie and UCLA's Griffin Canning combined to pitch 14 scoreless innings.
Jaskie threw strikes on nine of his first 10 pitches and held UCLA without a hit for the first three innings. A bloop single to lead off the bottom of the fourth gave the Bruins their first hit of the day, but Jaskie responded with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to end the frame.
UCLA threatened in the fifth inning. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with two outs, but Jaskie struck out the Bruins' leading hitter, Sean Bouchard, looking to get out of the jam.
Jaskie pitched six innings with just three hits allowed, six strikeouts and four walks.
Canning had not allowed a run or even an extra-base hit in his first 13 innings of the season, and he continued his scoreless streak by tossing eight innings with three hits allowed, 12 strikeouts and three walks.
Bivens got the first extra-base hit of the year off Canning with a double down the leftfield line in the first inning. The Wolverines threatened in the sixth inning with a single and walk to start. However, a double-steal attempt ended in Ako Thomas being thrown out at third. Canning settled in and finished off the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
There were only eight combined hits in the game and 14 runners left on base. U-M went 0-for-8 at the plate with runners on base, while UCLA was 1-for-11.
Michigan will continue its spring break trip with another game in Los Angeles tomorrow (Saturday, March 4). The Wolverines will be at USC with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. PST.
