ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell to James Madison, 18-6, in its 2017 home opener on Saturday (Feb. 11) inside Oosterbaan Field House.
For the second straight game, senior Anna Schueler led Michigan in points, recording two goals and one assist this afternoon. Seniors Sophie duPhily, Tess Korten, Kim Coughlan, and Lauren Oberlander each added one goal.
With her free-position goal in the second half, Korten became the fourth Wolverine in program history to reach 100 career points, joining fellow seniors Jess Angerman, Schueler and Coughlan in the 100-point club.
Six minutes into the game, James Madison opened the scoring with two quick goals within just 16 seconds of each other. Schuler answered with just over 20 minutes left in the half, dodging two defenders down the middle to score Michigan's first goal of the game.
The Dukes scored a free-position goal at 15:44 and then Coughlan followed less than a minute later with a man-up goal. JMU then tallied four straight, including one man-up goal, before Oberlander slowed the run with her third goal of the season. Schueler drove down the middle, drew a defender, and dumped the ball inside to Oberlander for the quick one-timer. But the Dukes resumed their run, scoring four unanswered goals to close the first half on an 8-1 run and make it an 11-3 game at halftime.
The second half started with two more goals for the Dukes, before a free-position goal from Korten at 24:45 helped her reach the 100 career-point milestone and make it a 13-4 game. During the middle of the half, the Wolverines and Dukes exchanged goals, including duPhily's first goal of the season and Schueler's second goal of the game, to make it 15-6 Dukes with 12:36 remaining in the game. duPhily's goal came on a free-position attempt after JMU goalie Emily Poelma was whistled for a foul out of the crease and found herself behind duPhily on the 12-meter arc, and duPhily easily converted on the open net. James Madison closed the game with the two final goals of the afternoon to make the final score 18-6.
Michigan won the ground ball battle, 18-14, but fell short at the draw, 16-9, in addition to being outshot 29-19. The Maize and Blue was nearly perfect on clears, going 13-for-14 in transition.
U-M goalie, sophomore/freshman Alli Kothari, earned her first career start, making one save in the first 30 minutes of play, while sophomore Mira Shane came into mind the net in the second half, making five stops.
The Wolverines will remain at home to host Notre Dame in the second contest of the three-game homestand on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. inside Oosterbaan Field House.
