ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's lacrosse head coach Jennifer Ulehla announced the hiring of assistant coach Laura Bernotas on Tuesday, Aug. 25. She will join the Wolverine staff after three seasons as an assistant coach at Grand Valley State University (NCAA Division II) and will work primarily with the Maize and Blue offense.
"It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Laura Bernotas as the newest addition to our women's lacrosse staff," said Ulehla. "Laura brings a wealth of knowledge and extensive coaching experience that will have an immediate impact on our team this year. She understands the fundamental aspects of developing a successful program and possesses the positive energy, relentless work ethic and strong character necessary to make a difference."
"I would like to thank Coach Ulehla and the athletic department for this incredible opportunity to join the women's lacrosse staff at the University of Michigan," said Bernotas. "This University has a strong tradition of excellence and I am extremely excited to continue to build upon this tradition within the women's lacrosse program. This is a young team with tremendous potential and I am eager to get started in further developing Michigan lacrosse into a nationally competitive program."
Bernotas joined the GVSU coaching staff in 2012 to assist with the Lakers' attackers, midfielders and goalies. Most recently in 2015, she helped lead Grand Valley to a 15-4 record (7-0 GLIAC) and its third straight GLIAC regular-season and tournament titles. She helped coach 23 All-GLIAC selections, two IWLCA All-Americans and three All-North Region team members, and guided the Lakers to a national ranking of No. 13 during the 2015 season.
Prior to making the move to Grand Valley, Bernotas had served as an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg University (2011-12) and the College of St. Elizabeth (2010). While at ESU, she helped the Warriors reach the second round of the Pennsylvania Schools Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs, while guiding the program to a No. 14 national ranking.
Bernotas played collegiately for three seasons at East Stroudsburg and earned her bachelor's degree in health education in 2008. She also went on to receive her master's degree in exercise science and health promotion, and become certified as a personal trainer by the National Academy of Sport Science.
