The University of Michigan baseball team (21-16, 6-6 Big Ten) starts the second half of the Big Ten Conference schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Purdue (12-24, 1-8 Big Ten). The three-game set starts Friday afternoon (April 17) at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The series continues Saturday (April 18) at 2 p.m. and concludes on Sunday afternoon (April 19) at 1 p.m. All three contests will be streamed on BTN Plus. Live audio will be available on WCBN Radio for Friday and Sunday, while WLBY will carry the Saturday game. The Wolverines are coming off back-to-back 4-2 losses to Michigan State (April 14) and Eastern Michigan (April 15).
SCOUTING PURDUE -- The Boilermakers (12-24, 1-8 Big Ten) are coming off a 14-5 win over IPFW on Wednesday night (April 15). Harry Shipley had five RBI in the win over the Mastodons while Alec Olund was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Kyle Wood leads Purdue with a .366 batting average and five home runs. On the mound, Matt Frawley has a 4.85 ERA and 21 strikeouts.
SERIES VS. PURDUE -- Michigan has a 140-59 series advantage on Purdue heading into this weekend's series in Ann Arbor. Michigan took 2-of-3 games last year in West Lafayette, winning Friday's game 7-6 in 12 innings and taking Sunday's contest 13-3. Carmen Benedetti had the game-winning RBI in the 12th inning of the series opener. Michigan also took 2-of-3 games from the Boilermakers on May 10-12, 2013, the last time the two teams met in Ann Arbor.
BIG TEN LEADERS -- The Wolverines lead the Big Ten in batting average (.296) and are second in on-base percentage (.380) and doubles (75). On the mound, U-M is seventh in ERA (3.70) and is fourth in strikeouts (273). Senior Jackson Glines is second in the league in batting average (.368) and second in on-base percentage (.477) while sophomore Carmen Benedetti leads the Big Ten with 38 RBI. Junior Jacob Cronenworth is second with 37 runs scored. Classmate Cody Bruder is tied for eighth in hits with 46 and is tied for fifth with 30 RBI. Sophomore Brett Adcock is tied for ninth with 43 strikeouts.
U-M STARTS SECOND HALF OF B1G SCHEDULE -- Michigan will start the second half of its Big Ten schedule this weekend against Purdue. Michigan is 6-6 on the year with three of its four series on the road. This included taking 2-of-3 games against No. 24 Maryland and winning a series at Indiana. The Wolverines are hitting .277 in conference games with 31 extra-base hits. Sophomore Carmen Benedetti leads U-M in conference matchups with a .350 batting average and 11 RBI. On the mound, freshman Ryan Nutof is 2-2 with 19 strikeouts in 22.1 innings pitched while junior Jacob Cronenworth has a 3.52 ERA in 15.1 innings of work.
PUTNAM MAKES OPENING DAY ROSTER FOR THE WHITE SOX -- Zach Putnam (2006-08) made the Opening Day roster for the Chicago White Sox in 2015 and has made three appearances in the season's first two weeks. Putnam had a strikeout in a hitless inning at Cleveland on April 15. Michigan also had 11 former players on minor league rosters, including five players (Ryan LaMarre, Rich Hill, Chris Berset, Clayton Richard and Bobby Korecky) in Triple-A.
UP NEXT -- Michigan ends its five-game homestand this Tuesday (April 21) against Oakland. First pitch is at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
