Sophomore Jess Angerman talks about the excitement around starting Big Ten Conference play at Ohio State as well as the growth of lacrosse, and also discusses her academic interests at Michigan.
On the team's mentality after a long weekend with two games ... "Obviously Colorado was a really tough loss, but I think we're coming out of the Marquette-Colorado weekend with a lot of confidence. I think a lot of things have started to click, both on offense and defense, and the entire team is really starting to come together. Our game plan going into Ohio State is going to be a pretty strong one, so everyone is pretty excited."
On preparing to play the first Big Ten Conference game ... "We definitely realize what an honor it is to be in a conference like the Big Ten. Even in the ALC last year, it was an honor to be in that conference. To be the best, you have to play the best and I think everyone is really psyched about getting started in Big Ten play. This is a great game to get Big Ten play started with and we're really looking forward to this game and the rest of the season."
On keys to finding success against Ohio State ... "We try and watch as much film as we think will help us break down our opponent's game plan, but a lot of the time coach (Ulehla) just focuses us on Michigan's game plan. It's all about us and coming together as a team and not worrying about the other team."
On having just one game this week compared to two games in three days last week ... "Having two games in three days was a different situation than we've seen before, but now having a few days to settle in, take care of our academics and then focus on Friday's game is a nice change. We've had a couple days to get our minds right, which is nice."
On seeing lacrosse spread across the country as a Long Island native who grew up around the game ... "It's really nice to see the different areas that people come from where you wouldn't really expect lacrosse to be such a big sport. You see a lot of people pick up the game in their first year of high school and go on to become amazing players and that's really cool. It's great to see more and more people picking up the game and realizing what a great sport it is. If you're athletic enough and can get a stick in your hands, it can create a lot of great opportunities for people."
On her academic interests ... "I definitely wanted to pick something math related so I applied to the School of Information, which is interesting because it's only a two-year program at Michigan and it's the only program offered in the country that revolves around informatics. I thought it was a really great opportunity. I'm still waiting to hear if I got in, but I'm definitely planning to do something with social media and technology in society."
