Sophomore Brooke Pancoast shares her thoughts on being a leader for the second-year program and also discusses team and individual improvements from last year, as well as the team's focus for the upcoming game at Winthrop.
On the difference between year two compared to year one ... "The biggest difference between this year and last year is the role of leadership on the team and having a lot of sophomores step up as leaders. The sophomores are pulling the freshmen under their wing, but some of the freshmen are stepping up as leaders as well, on and off the field."
On what she worked on the most over the summer ... "For me, a lot of what I wanted to get better at was stick skills and footwork so I worked a lot on that. But I think the biggest difference between this year and last year is my confidence."
On the sophomores being the oldest class on the team ... "It's definitely a unique situation being the oldest class as sophomores, but it feels a lot like being seniors on our high school teams. We just have to step up and be leaders even though its sooner than we usually would have to. I think we're excited about the opportunity to be leaders this year, as well as in the next two years to come."
On the defensive unit being able to try new things based on more experience ... "Yea, we tried a backer-d last year and it didn't last very long -- we were just testing it out. But this year, our backer-d is going really well and we're excited to get better at it and perfect it."
On the team's focus preparing for Winthrop ... "We want to put the loss behind us, although we want to learn from it at the same time. We watched a lot of film, but we're focused mostly on watching film for this upcoming week and getting ready for Winthrop. I think it's important to put last weekend behind us and go out and play to win this weekend."
On her favorite part of traveling a lot during the early portion of the season ... "We're very fortunate here at Michigan to be able to travel for our games. My favorite part about traveling is being able to bond with our team on a daily and weekly basis. We spend, not only days together, but nights as well. That makes us really close as a team and I think that translates onto the field."
