ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team kicked off its 2013 season with a 5-2 home victory over Loyola-Chicago on Friday (Aug. 30) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Maize and Blue used pairs of scores from sophomore James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Box School) and junior TJ VanSlooten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview), while junior Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) chipped in a pair of assists in the victorious effort.

Following an opening interval where Murphy put U-M ahead 1-0 in the 32nd minute and a Loyola-Chicago tally in the 35th minute knotted the contest at 1-1, U-M surged in the second half with a four-goal outburst.
Murphy netted his second of the day off a corner kick from Arnone, back-heeling a shot out of midair from the left corner to bring the score line to 2-1. Four minutes later, VanSlooten added the first score of his U-M career off a header inside the six, deflecting a header from senior Ezekiel Harris (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth).
The Wolverines then stretched the tally to 4-1 in the 72nd minute of action as senior Malcolm Miller (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) slid a through-ball across the 18 after a 20-yard run that found a sliding T.J. Roehn (Tampa, Fla./South Florida), who buried the stellar service lower left.
The two sides traded goals late, beginning in the 82nd minute of a free kick from Loyola's Eric Nock for his second of the match. VanSlooten capped the victory in the 86th minute with his second marker of the night with a strike from 25 yards out following a clearance from U-M goalkeeper senior/junior Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills), who not only posted his first career assist but also made a pair of saves.
U-M returns to action Monday (Sept. 2), celebrating Labor Day by taking on the host Bowling Green Falcons at 7 p.m.
