ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind six different goal-scorers, the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team blasted Oakland, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 25) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines scored four goals in a 9:16 stretch toward the end of the first half to blow the game open, including goals from freshmen Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]), Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) and Anna Soccorsi (Yardley Pa./The Pennington School [NJ]). Sophomores Cassie Collins (San Diego, Calif./Westview) and Christina Ordonez (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and senior Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) also scored on Sunday.

The first 30 minutes of the first half were dictated by Oakland, as the Golden Grizzlies had an early advantage in shots, 4-0, and overall pace of play. Michigan got a big boost from its bench and finally broke through in the 33rd minute on a strike from Waldeck. Lewis made a nice move with the ball to outsmart an Oakland defender on the far side before slotting a pass to Waldeck at the top of the six-yard box. Waldeck finished the play, putting one past Oakland goalkeeper Payj O'Shea to give U-M the 1-0 lead.

In the 39th minute, Lewis scored a goal of her own to put U-M up 2-0. Ezurike ran up the right side with the ball and crossed it into the box, finding Waldeck. She redirected the ball to Lewis, who was wide open after finishing a run on the far post.

Michigan added two additional goals before the first half expired. In the 42nd minute, Lewis outran the Oakland defense on the right side, dropping a pass to sophomore Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep), who found a wide-open Soccorsi from 10 yards out. Her left-footed strike beat O'Shea lower left to make it 3-0. Two minutes later, Collins got in on the scoring action, blasting in a shot of her own from 20 yards to put the score at 4-0 going into the break.

The Wolverines kept up the scoring in the second half, as Ezurike received a pass from Waldeck and made a run that drew Oakland goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec out of the box. Ezurike punched a shot over Bukovec, adding another goal to make it 5-1. The Golden Grizzlies got on the board in the 76th minute on a goal from Meghan Reynolds, but the Wolverines answered with one of their own to cap the scoring on a goal from Ordonez. Far from goal, Ezurike cut through the Oakland defense untouched, which allowed Ordonez to make a run in behind her as Ezurike drew additional defenders. Ezurike dropped it off to a wide-open Ordonez, who scored on an open net.

Freshman Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield) played 69 shutout minutes in net, making two saves. Sophomore Maddie Clarfield (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) came on in relief for the other 21, making one save.

The Wolverines continue the homestand next weekend with a pair of matches, first hosting cross-county foe Eastern Michigan on Friday (Aug. 30). The match will begin at 7:30 p.m. following the men's soccer matchup (beginning at 4 p.m.) vs. Loyola at U-M Soccer Stadium.
