ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior midfielder Meghan Toohey (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) scored a golden goal with just 26 seconds remaining in the first overtime session to send the No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Eastern Michigan on Friday (Aug. 30) at U-M Soccer Stadium. Senior Shelina Zadorsky (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) was credited with an assist on Toohey's goal, which came from 25 yards out on the far side of the field and landed in the side netting.

In the 27th minute, senior Shelby Chambers-Garcia (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) sent a corner kick into the box that was received on the back post by an unmarked Holly Hein (Castaic, Calif./West Ranch). The fifth-year senior brought the ball down but could not put a touch on it, before Eastern Michigan defenders swarmed her, ending the scoring threat with a clear. Six minutes later, the Wolverines broke through on goal from freshman Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth). Chambers-Garcia brought the ball into the 18-yard box and sent a ball across the box past the Eastern Michigan backline to a streaking Lewis, who one-touched the ball out of the air with her right foot right into the back of the net.
Eastern Michigan turned the tables on Michigan in the second half, pressuring the back line with nine total shots. The Eagles broke through with six and a half minutes to play in regulation on a goal from Bianca Rossi. The Wolverines failed to clear the ball in the box and a scramble ensued. With little space, Rossi put just enough on the shot, sending a dribbler past U-M goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield). The two teams battled for the remainder of the half with no further results, sending the match to overtime.
Each team had three shots in overtime, and senior Kayla Mannino (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Avondale) nearly ended it in the 95th minute in on a curling shot just inside the 18-yard box that was saved after a diving effort by Eagles goalkeeper Megan McCabe. Toohey then ended the match four minutes later with just seconds on the clock.
Bucklin played the entire match in net, making five saves.
U-M returns to the field on Sunday (Sept. 1), facing No. 21 San Diego State at 2 p.m. inside U-M Soccer Stadium.
