Michigan's season opening loss at Cal spoiled the debut of Michigan's first-year head coach Erik Bakich. The last time a Wolverine head coach won his first game was in 1963 when Moby Benedict led U-M over Grand Canyon by a 12-5 margin.
Junior RF Michael O'Neill, who led U-M in hitting for 2012 at .327 (53-for-162), was 2-for-4 with a first-inning single at California for U-M's first hit of the 2013 season. O'Neill had a double and scored a run in the third inning and he drew an intentional walk in the 10th inning.
O'Neill had 16 multi-hit games in each of his first two seasons at Michigan and he has 33 career multi-hit games in 96 games.
O'Neill has a five-game hitting streak that includes the final four games of 2012.
Sophomore DH Kevin White, who finished 2012 hitting .239 (26-for-109), was 2-for-5 with a pair of singles and he scored U-M's first run of 2013 in the second inning of Friday's season opener at California. White has eight multi-hit games in 40 games as a Wolverine.
White extended his hitting streak to six games with a second-inning single Friday at Cal. The streak includes his final five games of 2012. White has hits in 16 of his last 18 games.
Senior captain CF Patrick Biondi, who finished the 2012 season hitting .303 (67-for-221), was 1-for-4 with a run-scoring double Friday in the fourth inning to extend his team-leading hitting streak to eight games. He has hits in 19 of his last 21 games.
Freshman 3B Travis Maezes (1-for-4) and freshman 2B Jacob Cronenworth (1-for-4) each collected his first career hit as a Wolverine Friday at Cal and freshman 1B Jack Sexton (0-for-4) collected his first RBI.
Junior catcher Cole Martin was 1-for-3 with two walks as he reached base three times in five plate appearances Friday at California.
Sophomore SS Dylan Delaney was 1-for-3 with a bases loaded walk in the second inning to drive in the first U-M run of 2013.
