YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball program helped out the Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley on Saturday, Nov. 12. In its fifth year of volunteering its time and manpower to the organization, the Wolverines helped deconstruct a home in Ypsilanti.
The baseball team, which won the Rachael Townsend Community Service award last season, helped with the interior and exterior demolition, which included the entire basement, the upstairs rooms, a fence, poles and a few trees surrounding the house.
"The University of Michigan baseball team has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley since 2007," Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley Development Director Maggie Porter said. "When we schedule the Michigan baseball team, we always talk about how they come with a great attitude and are such a fun group to work with. We have to make sure we schedule them at a site that has a lot of immediate work to do, because they get so much done every year."
In addition, the baseball team has collected more than $7,000 this year in donations for Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley. Its five-year total in donations is more than $40,000.
"The guys did an outstanding job helping out with Habitat for Humanity," Michigan baseball head coach Rich Maloney said. "It's always one of the highlights for us as a team to help with Habitat and it's a wonderful way for our players to give back to the community. Also, thanks to our donors who have given so generously to help out with our cause."
"It felt great to help out Habitat for Humanity and support the great cause that they stand for," senior/junior pitcher Matt Broder said. "My teammates showed up at 8 a.m. with a great attitude and worked hard all day demolishing, fixing, and cleaning the house. It is pretty special knowing you contributed to someone succeeding in reaching a dream of owning their own home."
