ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan baseball co-captain Mike Cervenak, the all-time hit leader for the Wolverines, has been named to Team USA for the 2005 IBAF World Cup to be held Sept. 2-17 in The Netherlands.
Cervenak, who earned Pacific Coast League all-star honors this summer, played for the Fresno Grizzlies, the AAA franchise in the San Francisco Giants organization, and he was hitting .312 (154-for-494) at Fresno with 29 doubles, 19 homers and 103 RBI in 127 games when selected for the team.
Cervenak, who earned four letters at Michigan (1996-99), owns the Wolverine career records for at-bats (831), hits (293) and total bases (456). Cervenak hit 33 home runs in 214 games at Michigan and still ranks second on the career charts in both doubles (67) and RBI (187).
Cervenak played on the 1997 Big Ten regular-season championship team and the 1999 Big Ten playoff champs for the Wolverines. He was drafted by Oakland in 1998 but returned to Michigan for the 1999 season and was signed as a free agent by the New York Yankees in 2000. He has earned all-star status the past two years at Norwich in the Eastern League in 2004 and at Fresno this season.
