ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior co-captains Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS) and Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) of the University of Michigan baseball team added to their recent academic accolades with selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division team. Bohm was named to the second team as selected by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), while Butler was named to the third team. Bohm and Butler had earlier been named to the all-district first team.
It marks the first Academic All-America honors for a member of the Michigan baseball program since outfielder Dan Sanborn was named to the second team in 1997. It was the first time two Wolverines have been honored in the same season since Scott Weaver (first team) and Brian Simmons (second team) were both named in 1995.
To be nominated for the Academic All-America program a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve on his team.
Bohm, a movement science major in his second year with the Wolverines after a transfer from Auburn, has earned a pair of U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Awards and is in line to earn Academic All-Big Ten honors for the first time this spring.
A two-time All-Big Ten second team selection at first base, Bohm was winner of the Ray Fisher Award as Michigan's Most Valuable Player a year ago and he was winner of the Bill Freehan Award as the top offensive player on the baseball team in 2004.
Bohm is hitting .376 for the Wolverines and leads the team with 62 RBI. He has 158 hits and 114 RBI in 118 games as a Wolverine heading into the NCAA Regional opener vs. South Carolina (June 3).
Butler, who was named Michigan's baseball honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, was recently named a winner of the Bob Ufer Spirit Award presented by Ufer's Quarterback Club. He is a four-time winner of the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Award and he is a two-time and soon to be a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Butler, an English major in LS&A, won the inaugural Bates-Deskins Award for Athletic and Academic Achievement presented by the University in 2004, and in 2003 he was winner of the Steve Boros Award as the top student-athlete on U-M's baseball team.
On the field Butler, a second team All-Big Ten selection in 2005, is hitting .356 with 14 doubles, two triples, a team-leading total of seven homers and 50 RBI. He is the active career leader with 16 game-winning RBI and he has hit 11 career homers including a pair as a pinch hitter.
