ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) scored the game-winning goal 4:24 into the overtime period to propel the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 1-0 upset of No. 3 Michigan State on Saturday (Oct. 16) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Hortillosa tallied her fifth game-winner of the season to break the scoreless tie as the Wolverines controlled the play early in extra frame, applying pressure deep in the Spartan zone. Sophomore Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) set up the play by carrying the ball into the striking circle down the right side of the field and firing a low shot on MSU goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy. As the Spartan goalie came out of the cage to make the initial save, the ball was rebounded to senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican), who pushed it to the left side of the circle, where Hortillosa stood alone to bang it low into the open goal.
U-M's entire defensive unit contributed to shut down the Spartans as they flurried the U-M cage throughout the contest, outshooting the Wolverines 22-11 and recording eight corners to U-M's four. Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) made a season-high 10 stops in the Maize and Blue cage to pick up her fourth shutout of the season and her second against the Spartans in three games.
Junior Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) dove in front of a Spartan shot midway through the first half to earn a defensive save while Riley turned away several key MSU opportunities late in the frame as the Spartans fired four point-blank shots on the Michigan cage within a span of just three minutes.
The Wolverines' best scoring opportunities during regulation came within the opening minutes of the second half as U-M recorded two penalty corners and a pair of shots on goal within less than a minute. MSU responded by taking play in the other direction with three penalty corners and seven shots, only one of which passed through to Riley.
Following the strong Spartan flurry early in the second half, play was largely contained to midfield for the remainder of the frame. The Wolverines were held to just one more shot on goal while Riley recorded three saves within the final nine minutes to send the game into the extra period.
The Wolverines will wrap up the weekend against No. 4 Maryland on Sunday (Oct. 17). The non-conference match is slated for 1 p.m. at Ocker Field.
