| | 2002 Michigan Baseball Captains (from left): Nate Wright, Bobby Korecky, Joe Young, Mike Sokol |
Korecky, a second team All-Big Ten Conference performer as a starting pitcher, completed eight of his 12 starts as a junior in 2001 and worked 101.2 innings, the second best single-season innings pitched total in Wolverine history. He helped lead Michigan into the playoffs, as the Wolverines were 5-2 in his seven conference series-opening starts. Korecky was 6-4 with a conference-leading 3.36 ERA and he was named winner of the Geoff Zahn Award as Michigan's Most Valuable pitcher.
RHP Young returns for his fifth season after two seasons rehabbing following arm surgery. A two-time winner of the Steve Boros Award (1998, '99) as the top student-athlete on the baseball team, Young hopes to regain his 1999 form that produced 21 strikeouts in 24.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Senior/junior Wright, who earned the Betty Simmons Award as Michigan's Most Improved Player in 2001, finished second on the team with a .327 batting average and hit five homers while making 36 starts at first base.
Senior/junior Sokol, who was second on the team with 36 runs batted in, hit .278 with five homers while seeing most of his action as the designated hitter. Sokol provides a slick glove at first base and has also played in the outfield in his Wolverine career.
Michigan opens the 2002 season by facing Oregon State (Feb. 22) in tournament action in Riverside, Calif. The Wolverines are scheduled to play nine games on the spring break trip to California (Feb. 22-March 3).
