Michigan (0-1) fell behind 10 minutes into the game when Abbey Woolley scored on a penalty corner for the Tar Heels. North Carolina added a second goal at the 24:08 mark of the second half with a goal by Jana Toepel, then took a 3-0 lead after Carrie Lingo found the net with 7:20 remaining.
The Wolverines were able to get on the scoreboard with a goal by junior Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon HS) off of a penalty corner with about four minutes left in the match. UNC (1-0) finished the scoring with a fourth goal with just over a minute to play.
In addition to her goal, UNC's Toepel, a first team All-America selection in 1998 and member of the U.S. National Team, earned assists on the first and third goals to give her a three-point game.
Michigan goalkeeper Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) made seven saves, and North Carolina goalkeeper Amy Tran stopped five shots.
This was the second meeting between the Tar Heels and the Wolverines, as North Carolina defeated Michigan 6-3 in Ann Arbor on Sept. 6, 1997. Last season, Michigan finished the season as the 10th-ranked team in the nation, while UNC finished the season ranked fourth.
Michigan returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, Aug. 29) against Radford in Chapel Hill, N.C., at noon.
