ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After two straight walk-off wins, the University of Michigan baseball team's late comeback fell short in a 7-5 loss to Washington on Sunday afternoon (April 26) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (27-17, 12-9 Big Ten) trailed 7-3 entering the bottom of the ninth and drew three straight walks to load the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate. Brayden Jefferis delivered his third hit of the day to score Josh Campbell. A double play recorded the first two outs but allowed Colby Turner to score from third. With the tying run still at the plate, a flyout ended the game.
Washington (19-23, 9-12 Big Ten) responded after Evan Haeger led off the game with a home run for the Wolverines in the first inning. The Huskies used a two-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the fourth to take the lead, adding another run in the fifth.
Michigan answered in the bottom of the fifth. Matthew Ossenfort singled to open the inning and moved into scoring position after a base hit from Dane Morrow and a sacrifice bunt by Drew Culbertson. Ossenfort came home on a wild pitch. Grant Bradley held Washington scoreless in the sixth, and the Wolverines added another run when Brenden Stressler singled with two outs and scored on a double by Ossenfort.
Washington extended its lead with three runs in the seventh on two hits to go ahead 7-3. Michigan left two runners on in the seventh and one in the eighth before its ninth-inning rally came up short.
The Wolverines will have the week off before heading to Maryland for a three-game series beginning Friday (May 1) at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., with the game streamed on B1G+.
