COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- In an extra-inning pitchers' duel, the University of Michigan baseball came out on top, winning 2-1 over Maryland in 10 innings on Friday night (May 1) at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium in the series opener.

Michigan (28-17, 13-9 Big Ten) entered the 10th inning with just one hit, but the score was tied at one due to strong pitching from Kurt Barr and Gavin DeVooght (2-3). Joonsung Park opened the inning with a solo home run to left field to put Michigan ahead, 2-1. Dane Morrow and Evan Haeger tallied hits in the inning as well to bring the Wolverine hit total to four. DeVooght sent the Terrapins down in order in the bottom of the 10th with two strikeouts to secure the victory.

Maryland (22-24, 6-16 Big Ten) held the Wolverines to just three baserunners over the first five innings. Drew Culbertson opened the sixth with a double for the Wolverines' first hit of the day and later scored on a Brayden Jefferis groundout. The Terrapins answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at one.

The Maize and Blue drew a walk in the eighth and the ninth, but neither scored. DeVooght took over with two outs in the sixth and allowed a hit in the seventh and the ninth, but got out of both jams with double plays.

Barr finished the day with eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits, while DeVooght earned the win and struck out four over 4.1 scoreless.

The Wolverines will continue the series against the Terrapins on Saturday (May 2) at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
