MALIBU, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team took down Pepperdine 5-2 on Saturday afternoon (March 7), closing out its spring break trip with a victory and earning a series win at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Michigan (8-6) opened the scoring in the first inning and kept the lead throughout, scoring again in the third and the fourth. Jack Laffitte began the contest with a double and scored on a two-out single from Cade Ladehoff. Two innings later, Greg Pace Jr. led off with a single and scored on a Laffitte single. In the fourth, Pace doubled and was again brought home by Laffitte.
Pepperdine (3-11) was stymied by Kurt Barr (2-1) early, as the senior allowed just one hit over the first three innings and struck out two. The Waves got to Barr in the fourth with a leadoff double and two walks, but Barr limited the damage to just two runs with two more strikeouts to keep the Wolverines in front.
The Wolverines extended their lead in the sixth. Brayden Jefferis and Pace singled to open the frame and advanced on Cooper Mullens sacrifice bunt. A Drew Culbertson single scored Jefferis and Pace to take a 5-2 lead.
After the fourth, Barr (2-1) settled in and set down six straight over his final two innings.
David Lally Jr. took over in the seventh and, after allowing a leadoff single, struck out the next three Pepperdine batters, all looking. Lally got into some trouble with one out in the eighth after a hit by pitch and two singles loaded the bases. He induced a foul out and a flyout to keep the lead intact.
In the ninth, Lally's 1-2-3 inning secured the save and the U-M series win.
Laffitte and Pace each tallied three hits, and Culbertson had two. Both Laffite and Culbertson had two RBI, while Pace scored three times. Barr (2-1) struck out five over six innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Lally earned his first save of the season with three scoreless innings and struck out three.
Michigan will begin the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday (March 10) at 4 p.m., when the Wolverines host Western Michigan at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The home opener will be streamed live on B1G+.
