NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped a 9-8 decision in 12 innings to California State Northridge on Tuesday night (March 3) at Robert J. Hiegert Field.
In a four-hour, 20-minute contest, CSUN (7-5) delivered the game-winning single with one out in the 12th after holding Michigan (6-5) scoreless from the fifth frame on.
The Matadors opened the scoring with a leadoff home run in the second inning, but the Wolverines responded with a six-run third. Matthew Ossenfort singled and Greg Pace Jr. walked to start the frame before a sacrifice bunt from Drew Culbertson moved the runners into scoring position. Jack Laffitte brought Ossenfort home with a single, and after a strikeout, Colby Turner delivered an RBI double to put Michigan ahead. Brenden Stressler followed with a two-run single before Cade Ladehoff capped the inning with a home run to give U-M a 6-1 lead.
David Lally Jr. continued his strong outing with a 1-2-3 bottom of the third, striking out two. Michigan added more two-out runs in the fourth as Culbertson singled and Laffitte drew a walk. A hit by pitch loaded the bases, and Turner came through again with his second RBI double of the game, driving in two. A walk reloaded the bases, but U-M could not add to its lead.
Lally worked another 1-2-3 inning in the fourth and allowed just a solo home run in the fifth before the Matadors plated five in the sixth.
Max Debiec ended the sixth with a strikeout and combined with Gavin DeVooght for a scoreless seventh. In the eighth, CSUN tied the game with a solo home run, while DeVooght recorded three strikeouts.
The Wolverines put at least one runner on base in every inning from the fifth on, but couldn't get multiple runners aboard again until the 11th. Carson Luna singled with one out in the 11th, and Turner was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout and groundout kept Michigan off the board. DeVooght held CSUN scoreless in the ninth and recorded one out in the 10th before Shane Brinham took over.
A shallow flyout to left allowed Michigan to turn a double play at the plate to end the 10th. The Matadors managed just one baserunner in the 11th, an intentional walk with two outs, before using a leadoff hit by pitch, sacrifice bunt and game-winning single in the 12th.
Luna, Turner and Ossenfort each tallied two hits, with Turner adding a run and three RBIs. Laffitte reached base three times in his first career start and scored twice.
Michigan will continue its spring break trip Thursday (March 5), opening a three-game series against Pepperdine at 1:30 p.m. PT at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The game will stream on ESPN+.
