
Shannehan's Five Goals Lead Michigan Past Detroit Mercy

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team used five goals from freshman Luke Shannehan and Nick Roode's third straight hat trick to secure an 11-7 victory over Detroit Mercy in a midweek non-conference contest on Tuesday (Feb. 10) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Shannehan paced the Wolverine offense with five goals and an assist as he put six of his seven shots on frame. All three of Roode's goals came in the first half, and added two assists for five points. Thomas Augustine and CJ Reilly each scored one for the Maize and Blue, and Bo Lockwood had a goal and an assist.
Jack Rideout won a team-best eight faceoffs, and Tay Rodriguez won four, while Jack Marlow caused two turnovers and Hunter Taylor recorded his second straight double-digit-save effort with 10 stops in the cage.
Roode recorded back-to-back goals and Reilly launched a rocket with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter to give U-M a quick 3-0 lead. Michigan continued to build on its advantage in the second quarter as Shannehan worked around the back of the cage before Roode completed his hat trick with 13:40 left in the half.
Eight minutes later, Shannehan netted his second of the game to put U-M up 6-0. Detroit Mercy (0-2) found the back of the cage for the first time with just over two minutes to play in the half; however, with just one second left on the clock, Shannehan gave Michigan a 7-1 advantage at the halftime break.
Roode and Shannehan recorded hat tricks in the first half, while Taylor made seven saves.
The Wolverines (3-0) outscored the Titans 2-1 in the third quarter to enter the final 15 minutes of action with a 9-2 advantage.
Detroit Mercy scored four straight goals in an attempted comeback in the fourth quarter, but Shannehan stopped the run with a goal off a pass from Reilly with 6:38 left in the contest. Each team added one final goal to its tally as U-M finished off its four-goal victory.
Michigan remains at U-M Lacrosse Stadium to host Lehigh at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 14). The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
