
Michigan Stuns No. 8 Penn State on Last-Second Goal from Shannehan

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team used a late goal from Luke Shannehan to secure a 9-8 win over No. 8 Penn State on Saturday afternoon (April 11) at Panzer Stadium.
With under a minute to play, Michigan worked the ball around its offensive end before Alex Gatto found Shannehan, who dodged down the left side and scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining. The win gave the Wolverines their second straight victory over a ranked opponent.
Michigan (5-7, 2-2 B1G) took a lead into halftime, but momentum shifted to Penn State (6-5, 2-2 B1G) in the second half as the Nittany Lions built a two-goal lead with 9:22 remaining. The Wolverines forced a turnover on the ensuing possession and responded as Nick Roode scored twice in a four-minute span before Shannehan netted the late winner.
Roode paced the Michigan offense with four goals on six shots, while Adam Udell recorded three assists. Gatto, Alex Lobel, Bo Lockwood, and Josh Ford each added a goal for the Maize and Blue.
Defensively, Will Tominovich posted three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Rowan Clay added two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Chris Gaine and Jack Marlow also contributed two caused turnovers apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Hunter Taylor made 11 saves, including four in the third quarter to help Michigan maintain its position.
Penn State opened the scoring, but Michigan responded to close the first quarter. Kade Goldberg forced a turnover, and Lobel scored off a pass from Shannehan to tie the game at one. The Wolverines added back-to-back goals from Gatto and Lockwood, and Taylor made a key save late as Michigan took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
The Nittany Lions struck first in the second quarter before Udell found Roode for a one-timer. Later, Taylor sparked transition as Patrick Kelley advanced the ball to Ford, who finished to give Michigan a 5-2 lead at halftime.
Michigan carried momentum into the third quarter with strong defensive play, including multiple saves from Taylor and forcing seven Penn State turnovers. The Nittany Lions, however, closed the quarter with two straight goals to pull within one.
Penn State scored again to open the fourth quarter, but Roode answered on the ensuing faceoff to regain the lead. The Nittany Lions responded with a three-goal run to take an 8-6 advantage with nine minutes remaining.
Michigan answered again as Roode scored twice in a four-minute span to tie the game at 8-8, setting the stage for Shannehan's game-winner in the final seconds.
