BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team opened Big Ten play with a 14-8 loss at No. 12 Johns Hopkins on Saturday (March 21) at Homewood Field. Michigan (3-6, 0-1 B1G) mounted a push in the fourth quarter, scoring twice in the opening two minutes, but could not close the gap as Johns Hopkins (6-2, 1-0 B1G) held on for the win.
The Wolverines saw strong contributions from their underclassmen. Freshman Adam Udell paced the offense with three goals, while Tay Rodriguez controlled the faceoff with 10 wins and added a score. Luke Shannehan contributed a first-half goal and junior Alex Gatto recorded a goal and an assist.
Defensively, Rowan Clay led the team with two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Hunter Taylor made 10 saves in net.
Michigan struck first when freshman Nicholas Voultos forced a turnover that led to a transition opportunity, finished by Will Tominovich with a long-range goal. Johns Hopkins responded with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead in the opening quarter.
The Wolverines answered as Shannehan dodged around the cage and scored to cut the deficit to 4-2 midway through the first. The Blue Jays added another goal late in the quarter to take a 5-3 advantage. Johns Hopkins pulled away in the second quarter, scoring three times while holding Michigan scoreless to carry an 8-2 lead into halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, the Wolverine defense capitalized on a Hopkins error as it won the ground ball and had a three-pass transition down the field for the Udell goal on the opposite side of the field, but once again, JHU scored a pair of goals to carry a 10-3 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.
Michigan capitalized on a defensive stop early in the second half, turning a ground ball into a quick transition goal by Udell. However, the Blue Jays answered with two more goals to extend their lead to 10-3 heading into the final quarter.
Michigan shifted the momentum out of the quarter break as Rodriguez battled for a faceoff win and took the ball to the cage for the U-M goal. The Wolverines won the ensuing faceoff, and Udell added his third goal of the game to cut the deficit to five with under four minutes remaining.
Michigan added late goals from Gatto and CJ Reilly, but the comeback effort fell short in the road defeat.
After six consecutive road games, Michigan will return home to face Maryland on Saturday (March 28) at 2 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game will air live on the Big Ten Network.
