Michigan (3-7, 0-2 Big Ten) cut Maryland's lead to one at 9-8 on an Eliot Dubick goal in the third quarter, but could not complete the comeback as the Terps finished the contest on a five-goal run.
Alex Gatto recorded his first hat trick of the season to lead the Wolverines, while Nick Roode scored twice and Bo Lockwood notched two points with a goal and an assist. Jackie Weller netted a goal off the draw and won eight faceoffs in the contest.
Rowan Clay led the defense with two caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Hunter Taylor tallied his seventh double-digit save effort and third straight with 11 stops.
Gatto opened the scoring five minutes into the first quarter; however, Maryland (4-4, 1-1 Big Ten) responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage going into the media timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Wolverines added their second goal courtesy of Roode. The Terrapins added one final goal in the last seconds of the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.
Maryland tacked on two goals to start the second quarter, and Michigan returned the favor when Lockwood wrapped a shot around the cage and Roode scored off a pass from Shannehan to remain within striking distance. Maryland scored twice in the final minutes of the half to carry an 8-4 advantage into the halftime break.
The Wolverines found a second gear coming out of halftime. Gatto once again opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, but Maryland answered on the ensuing faceoff. However, Michigan rattled off four straight goals, capped off with a Dubick goal off a pass from Lockwood, to come within one of the Terrapins with 1:42 left in the third quarter.
Michigan was unable to find another goal in the final 17 minutes of play as Maryland closed out the game on a 5-0 run to secure the victory.
