ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team earned its second consecutive win over a ranked opponent and secured the program's first-ever 2-0 conference start on Saturday afternoon (March 29), downing No. 14 Johns Hopkins 11-8 at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The win also is U-M's first against the Blue Jays in Ann Arbor.
U-M (6-4, 2-0 Big Ten) received contributions from five multi-point scorers, including hat tricks from Aidan Mulholland and sophomore Alex Lobel.
In his first career start, Lobel controlled the game early with a first-half hat trick, a new career high in goals scored for the second-year attacker. Mulholland also had a hand in Michigan's start, scoring or assisting on three of the first four Wolverine tallies. Senior John Morgan provided helpers on both of Mulholland's first-half goals to set a new personal best with two assists.
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, the U-M defense continued hounding Johns Hopkins (6-4, 0-2 Big Ten), forcing 10 first-half Blue Jay turnovers while besting the visitors in ground balls 18-11. Graduate defender Pace Billings paved the way with a season-high four caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
Johns Hopkins fought back in the third, erasing a 6-2 halftime deficit to tie the score at eight with 10:40 remaining in the fourth. But four saves from Taylor in the final 12 minutes helped swing momentum back to the Wolverines, who scored the final three goals of the contest to seal Michigan's victory.
The Wolverines will look for their third straight win when they welcome Penn State to U-M Lacrosse Stadium at noon on Sunday, April 6. The matchup will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
