ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team lost 12-5 to Penn State on Friday afternoon (March 28) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Colby Turner's 3-for-4, two-run performance paired with a Joe Longo pinch-hit, bases-clearing double in the sixth led the Wolverines (13-12, 5-5 Big Ten) at the plate. Starter David Lally Jr. (2-2) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts over five innings of work.
The Wolverines got the offense started early with two runs in the bottom of the first. A fielder's choice put Mitch Voit on base, and a Turner double gave U-M runners on second and third with one out. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and Jeter Ybarra delivered a two-run single to right field, but a double play ended the inning.
Penn State (17-8, 6-4 Big Ten) answered in the top of the second. An error followed by back-to-back doubles with one out tied the game, and a two-out single gave the Nittany Lions the lead, 3-2.
PSU added to its lead thanks to leadoff home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, then went ahead 11-2 with a six-run sixth. The Wolverines got three of those runs back in the bottom half, started by a leadoff single from Turner. A one-out single from Ybarra and two-out Brayden Jefferis hit-by-pitch loaded the bases before Longo pinch-hit for Matt Spear and doubled to right-center to bring them all home and cut the deficit to 11-5.
Penn State added one more run in the top of the eighth to go ahead by seven to cap the scoring.
Michigan will attempt to even its series against Penn State on Saturday (March 29) at 2 p.m., when the teams meet again at Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
