COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team took down No. 1 Maryland, 11-10, in triple overtime on Saturday (March 22) at SECU Stadium, earning the program's first-ever victory over a top-ranked opponent. Senior Ryan Cohen led the way with four points, including his 100th career goal, while classmate Hunter Taylor stopped a season-high 12 shots between the pipes, and sophomore Nick Roode buried the game-winner with 1:06 left in the third extra period.
The Wolverines (5-4, 1-0 Big Ten) leaned on their defense down the stretch, forcing 15 second-half turnovers to stifle the Terrapins (7-1, 0-1 Big Ten). Kees van Wees anchored the backline with a career-high four caused turnovers, including two in overtime. Taylor made six of his 13 saves in the fourth quarter and added two more in the second overtime, including a crucial stop on a breakaway just before time expired.
After a scoreless first overtime and defensive stands on both sides in the second, Nick Lauderback won the opening faceoff of the third OT. Emmett Houlihan then found a streaking Roode who tore twine for the game-winner, handing Maryland its first loss of the season.
Michigan opened strong, forcing a turnover on Maryland's first possession and converting it into goals from graduate student Lukas Stanat and junior Bo Lockwood. After the Terrapins responded with two goals, Cohen fed sophomore Jack Jenkins to make it 3-2.
In the second quarter, Emmett Houlihan and Jenkins added to the lead before Maryland rattled off three straight to pull ahead. Stanat closed the half with his second goal to tie the game.
Michigan took control in the third, outscoring Maryland 4-1. Cohen scored or assisted on three of the goals, while Aidan Mulholland added another to make it 10-8 entering the final quarter.
The Terrapins scored twice to open the fourth and tie the game at 10. Michigan's defense took over from there, forcing turnovers and keeping the game tied through regulation and two overtime periods until Roode's game-winner.
Michigan returns home to face Johns Hopkins on Saturday (March 29) at 1 p.m. inside U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
