CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 14 University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to No. 16 North Carolina, 15-6, at Dorrance Field on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8).
Michigan (1-1) was led offensively by Ryan Cohen, who had two goals and an assist, while Jack Jenkins tallied three assists. Defensively, Pace Billings and Kees van Wees notched two caused turnovers and a ground ball each and Hunter Taylor made seven saves with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
The Tar Heels (1-0) struck first with two quick goals before Jenkins hit Aidan Mulholland with a one-timer in front of the cage to bring Michigan within one with 11:09 remaining in the first quarter. UNC responded with three-straight goals but again U-M answered as Nick Roode notched the diving goal with 34 seconds remaining in the opening 15 minutes of play.
Bo Lockwood opened the second quarter with a behind-the-back goal off a pass from Jenkins as the Wolverines came within two, 5-3. The Tar Heels put together their second run of three goals to extend their lead to 8-3 with just over three minutes remaining in the half. Cohen brought the ball down the field and found CJ Reilly for a Michigan goal with one minute left but North Carolina responded with a final goal to take a 9-4 lead into the halftime break.
Cohen bounced in Michigan's lone goal of the third quarter, while North Caroline tacked on three more to take a 12-5 advantage into the final 15 minutes of action. Cohen added one final goal in the final quarter of action but the Wolverines were unable to get an offensive push going as it fell in its first road contest of the season.
Michigan continues its road stint as it travels to Hobart on Saturday (Feb. 15) for a noon contest.
