
Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Michigan to Victory at Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. -- The No. 17 University of Michigan men's lacrosse team outscored Hobart 7-1 in the final 15 minutes to earn a 15-9 road victory Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) at Stiles Field.
The Wolverines (2-1) were led by Aidan Mulholland and Jack Jenkins, who recorded four goals each, while Will Byrne notched his first hat trick in Maize and Blue. Lukas Stanat added a pair of goals, and CJ Reilly had three points with a goal and two assists. Mulholland also added two assists for six total points, and Jenkins picked up five ground balls.
Defensively, Mason Whitney had three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Pace Billings picked up seven ground balls and had one caused turnover. Kees van Wees added two caused turnovers and one ground ball.
Nick Lauderback won eight faceoffs, and Jack Rideout added three faceoff wins for the Maize and Blue, while Hunter Taylor made seven saves in the cage.
The teams traded goals to start the first quarter before Reilly notched his third point of the quarter, feeding Mulholland to give U-M a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter. Hobart opened the second quarter with two straight goals before Byrne tied it up with 7:49 left in the half. The Statesmen closed out the half with a pair of goals to take a 6-4 lead at the break.
Reilly led the Michigan offense with three points, while Billings led U-M with four ground balls, and Jenkins added three.
The Wolverines struck first in the third quarter with a Jenkins goal; however, Hobart extended its lead to three with another pair of goals, making it 8-5. Jenkins netted back-to-back goals to secure the hat trick and pull Michigan within one, 8-7, with just over two minutes left in the third quarter. Stanat tied the game in the closing minute as the teams entered the final 15 minutes deadlocked at 8-8.
Mulholland netted his second goal of the day less than 30 seconds into the fourth quarter to give the Wolverines a 9-8 lead. The offense continued to roll as Mulholland completed the hat trick and Byrne added his second of the day, extending U-M's lead to 11-8 with 10 minutes remaining.
Mulholland and Jenkins each scored their fourth goals of the game, and Stanat notched his second as U-M took a 14-8 advantage with just over two minutes to play. Hobart and U-M each added one final goal in the closing minute as Michigan secured the road victory over the Statesmen.
Michigan closes out its road stint on Saturday (Feb. 22) when it travels to Duke for a noon contest.
