LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team gave up four second-inning runs and could not recover in a 6-3 loss to Long Beach State in the series opener on Friday night (Feb. 28) at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Michigan (4-4) was led by Jonathan Kim, Mitch Voit and Benny Casillas who each tallied multiple hits. Casillas also registered an RBI and a run. On the mound, Gavin DeVooght (2-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits over five innings with two strikeouts and a pair of walks. Max Debiec tossed three no-hit relief innings, striking out four.
After a scoreless inning and a half to open the game, Long Beach State (5-4) got on the board in the bottom of the second with their first four batters reaching. All four came around to score to give the Dirtbags a 4-0 lead.
U-M answered with a run in the top of the third. Casillas led off with a single to right field and scored from first on a one-out Voit double to left-center field to draw the Wolverines within three, 4-1.
Michign threatened in the fourth when Matt Spear took a leadoff walk and moved to third on a stolen base and error but was tagged out at home plate on a fielder's choice. U-M tried to cut the deficit in the fifth with a one-out double from Kim, but a strikeout and flyout left him stranded at second.
The Dirtbags added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 6-1. The Wolverines added a run in the sixth when Cade Ladehoff led off with a walk. He moved to second on an error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt and scored on a Cole Caruso double. The Wolverines could not bring Caruso home, and LBSU held a 6-2 lead.
Debiec relieved DeVooght in the bottom of the sixth and pitched back-to-back 1-2-3 innings over the next two innings.
The Wolverines had a chance to get runs back in the top of the seventh after a leadoff walk and single, but three strikeouts ended the frame. U-M had another chance in the top of the eighth with a leadoff walk by Spear. Alfredo Velazquez came in as a pinch runner and scored on a two-out single from Casillas, but that was the lone run of the frame to bring the scoring to its conclusion.
Michigan will continue its three-game series against Long Beach State on Saturday (March 1) at 6 p.m. PST at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
