
Michigan Scores 19, Shuts Out Villanova

PONCE, Puerto Rico. -- The University of Michigan baseball team powered past Villanova with a dominant 19-0 victory Sunday morning (Feb. 16) in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Michigan (3-0) erupted for 19 runs on 24 hits while holding the Wildcats to just five hits and no runs. Ten different Wolverines crossed the plate, with Cade Ladehoff leading the way with four runs. Mitch Voit, Jeter Ybarra, Joonsung Park, and Matt Spear each recorded three or more RBIs. Ybarra tallied four hits, including a triple, while Voit collected three extra-base hits. David Lally Jr. earned the win, tossing five shutout innings while scattering three hits. Tate Carey, Max Debiec, and Brandon Newland combined to complete the shutout, keeping Michigan undefeated.
The Wolverines wasted no time getting on the board. Jonathan Kim led off with a double, and Ladehoff drew a walk before Ybarra roped a bases-clearing triple to give U-M a 2-0 lead with no outs. Villanova (1-2) recorded a groundout for the first out, but Spear followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Ybarra. Michigan stranded another runner before a flyout and fielder's choice ended the inning with U-M ahead 3-0. Lally Jr. retired the Wildcats in order in the bottom half.
Michigan extended its lead in the second as Greg Pace Jr. and Kim opened the frame with singles. Pace Jr. scored on Kim's hit after a stolen base, and Kim came home three batters later on Voit's deep double to right field. The Wolverines left two more runners stranded, while Villanova threatened in the third after drawing two walks. Lally Jr. escaped the jam with a strikeout.
U-M broke the game open in the fourth. After a quick out, four straight Wolverines reached base with three singles and a double. Voit's double plated Ladehoff, and Spear's single brought in Ybarra and Voit. A strikeout followed, but Cole Caruso singled to advance Spear, and Tyler Inge delivered an RBI single for his first collegiate hit. Villanova ended the inning with a strikeout but trailed 9-0. The Wildcats had their best scoring opportunity in the bottom half, but Pace Jr. fired a strike home to cut down a runner and strand two.
Kim doubled to start the fifth and scored on Ybarra's third hit of the day, a double to left. A stellar defensive play by Voit and Lally Jr. recorded the second out of the bottom half before Villanova doubled, but Lally Jr. ended the inning with another strikeout. U-M went down in order in the sixth, and Carey matched the effort on the mound, retiring the side while recording his first collegiate strikeout.
The Wolverines poured it on in the seventh with a pair of home runs. Ladehoff launched a solo shot for his first as a Wolverine. Ybarra followed with his fourth hit of the day, a single up the middle, before Voit crushed a two-run homer to left-center for his first of the season, extending the lead to 13-0. Carey continued his dominance, sending the Wildcats down in order with two strikeouts.
Michigan capped its offensive explosion with a six-run eighth. The first five batters reached base, highlighted by a two-run double from Pace Jr. before Park launched a grand slam, bringing home Pace Jr., AJ Garcia, and Ladehoff. U-M stranded two more runners but carried a commanding 19-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth. Debiec delivered a perfect 1-2-3 inning before Newland sealed the shutout in the ninth.
Michigan concludes the Puerto Rico Challenge on Monday (Feb. 17) in Caguas, Puerto Rico, at 10:00 AM AST against Stetson, with the game streaming on ESPN+.
