ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 win against No. 17 Indiana on Halloween Night Friday (Oct. 31) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The Wolverines (9-6, 4-4 Big Ten) scored twice on their attack penalty, taking their first lead late in the first quarter before icing the game late in the fourth. Junior Abby Burnett tallied the first and game-winning marker -- her first of the season -- at the 13:28 mark. Graduate student Claire Taylor took the initial shot on the arc, and Burnett got her stick on it near the stroke mark to tip it to the right side of the cage.
Michigan turned away three straight Indiana corners midway through the second quarter before doubling its lead at 32:58 early in the third. Sophomore Eva Bernardy hammered a hard pass into the circle from the right side of the field; the ball banked off an IU stick and right to junior Esmée de Willigen in front. De Willigen created some space, wound up and fired a shot to the lower-right corner of the cage for her third goal of the season.
While Michigan largely controlled the third quarter, Indiana (9-8, 4-4 Big Ten) drew a corner in the final 10 seconds of the frame but could not get a shot off when the Wolverines intercepted an extra pass on the arc. The Hoosiers carried some of the momentum into the final frame, but Michigan denied back-to-back corner chances early in the fourth.
Indiana broke through midway through the fourth, at 51:14, when its inserter Theresa Ricci knocked in a corner rebound from the left post. The Hoosiers pulled their goalkeeper soon after getting on the board, but could not generate any quality scoring chances.
Graduate student Abby Tamer netted the Wolverines' insurance tally at 58:45 on a penalty corner with no Indiana goalkeeper. The Hoosiers stopped the initial shot -- IU's Ines Garcia Prado had three defensive saves in the game -- but Tamer chipped in the rebound from the stroke mark for her team-best eighth goal of the season.
Michigan outshot the Hoosiers 15-8 and narrowly outcornered them 9-8. Graduate student goalkeeper Caylie McMahon and junior/sophomore Hala Silverstein posted one save apiece, while Indiana goalkeeper Sadie Canelli posted six stops in addition to Garcia Prado's defensive saves.
The Wolverines will be the No. 4 seed for the Big Ten Tournament and open play against fifth-seeded Rutgers at 11 a.m. on Thursday (Nov. 6) at Indiana's Deborah Tobias Field. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
