Michigan Survives Late Rally in Road Victory at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team used a four-point night from senior captain Jenna Lang to outlast Maryland, 4-3, on Thursday night (Oct. 16) at Ludwig Field. Lang assisted on two goals and added one of her own, helping Michigan build a 4-0 second-half lead before the Wolverines held on as the Terrapins rallied with three goals in the final 24 minutes of an intense Big Ten matchup.
Gabrielle Prych notched her second three-plus point game of the season for Michigan (6-7-3, 3-3-3 Big Ten), teaming up with Lang to assist on senior Vickie Jones' first career goal, scored in just the second minute of play.
After the remainder of the first half saw even play with two shots on goal per side, Michigan doubled its advantage just over a minute into the second stanza when Elle Ervin tallied her sixth goal of the season.
Lang led a solo attack down the left wing to make it 3-0 in the 47th minute, and after a header from Prych off another Lang cross, Michigan extended its lead to 4-0 with 24 minutes remaining.
Maryland (6-10, 2-7 Big Ten) clawed back with goals in the 67th and 69th minutes to cut the lead in half. Kali Burrell nearly stopped the surge with a strike off the woodwork with 15 minutes to play, but the Terrapins capitalized three minutes later to make it 4-3.
The Wolverines sealed the win behind one of Sophie Homan's four saves and steady possession from Ervin, Lang, Prych and Ella Jablinskey to close out the match and secure three key Big Ten points on the road.
Michigan continues its push for a Big Ten Tournament berth with its final road match of the regular season at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 19) at Rutgers.
