PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team (6-8-3, 3-4-3 Big Ten) could not survive a slow start in a 3-1 loss to Rutgers at Yurchak Stadium on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) . The Wolverines were outshot, 10-1, by Rutgers (4-7-4, 2-7-1 Big Ten) in an opening period that saw two Scarlet Knights scores. Elle Ervin's seventh goal of the season was not enough to spark a second-half comeback in U-M's final road test of 2025.

Senior goalkeeper Sophie Homan made nine saves in net for the Wolverines, who did not put a shot on goal until Jenna Lang forced a Rutgers save in the 55th minute. Lang and Ervin combined for six of Michigan's nine shots, and three of its four shots on target.

Ervin's 57th-minute goal off a long through ball from Gabrielle Prych brought the offense to life -- with Michigan logging the next three shots. The high-tempo pressure from U-M drew nine second-half Rutgers fouls to go along with a trio of yellow cards booked to the home side.

Michigan had more opportunities to even the score down the stretch, starting when Lang's free kick from 25 yards out was saved in the 70th minute. Kali Burrell rifled a screamer from the top of the box eight minutes later, and after a VAR review for a handball was upheld, Rutgers again escaped unscathed.

Rutgers was able to possess in the 86th minute after a lengthy spell of Michigan offense, and the Scarlet Knights capitalized on their opportunity by bending in the third and final score of the afternoon to end U-M's unbeaten streak at two games.

Michigan will return home for its final game of the regular season against Illinois at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at U-M Soccer Stadium. The fixture will air live on B1G+ with Big Ten Tournament implications on the line.
