COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell to No. 15 Ohio State, 1-0, to end its three-game win streak on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12) at Buckeye Turf Field.
The Buckeyes scored the game's lone goal at 25:50 following their first penalty corner. Junior/sophomore Hala Silverstein stopped the initial shot from the scoring arc, but OSU tracked down the rebound on the left side and chipped a high shot into the opposite corner of the cage.
Michigan outshot Ohio State 6-3, while corners were even at 3-3. The Wolverines had two high-quality opportunities in quick succession late in the third quarter — their best chances of the match. Graduate student Abby Tamer sent a cross from the right baseline, and sophomore Dru Moffett got a clean sweep on it, but OSU goalkeeper Maddie Stevens recovered in time to make a pad save.
About a minute later, junior Esmée de Willigen intercepted a pass near the OSU 25 and carried it into the circle. Stevens came out to clear the ball, but it went right to junior Payton Maloney, who could not control it as a Buckeye defender tied her up in front of the cage.
Silverstein earned one save in the first half, while graduate student Caylie McMahon did not face a shot in the second. Stevens stopped both Wolverine shots on goal for the Buckeyes.
The Wolverines (8-4, 3-2 Big Ten) will have a bye week before traveling to face Northwestern at 3 p.m. CT on Friday (Oct. 24) in Evanston, Ill., and Iowa at noon CT on Sunday (Oct. 26) in Iowa City, Iowa.
