COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team had its 11-game win streak halted after falling to No. 8 Maryland 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 20) at the Terrapins' Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. It was the Wolverines' first loss in Big Ten Conference play.
Michigan (11-2, 4-1 Big Ten) outshot the Terrapins 9-5, including a 5-1 advantage in the fourth quarter, and out cornered them 4-2, but Maryland's 2-for-2 conversion on penalty corners made the difference.
Maryland (10-4, 5-2 Big Ten) broke through at 19:29 in the second quarter on its first penalty corner of the game. The direct shot from the top of the arc deflected off a Michigan stick and sailed high over sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Hala Silverstein, who was laid out on the turf.
The Wolverines ramped up pressure in the second half, dominating possession and opportunities in the final quarter, but Maryland iced the game late. The Terrapins worked the ball downfield and drew a corner, converting it at 57:49 on a shot through traffic from the right side of the circle that again deflected off a Michigan defender.
Silverstein faced just two shots on goal, while Maryland goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko stopped all five of Michigan's shots on goal. It was the Wolverines' first shutout loss of the season.
The Wolverines will close out the home portion of their regular season next weekend, hosting Northwestern at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 25) and Indiana at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 27) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Friday's game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, while Sunday's will be streamed on B1G+. Admission is free to both contests.
