ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team forced overtime with a late fourth-quarter corner tip, but fell 2-1 to No. 1 Northwestern on Friday (Oct. 25) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The Wildcats, who clinched a share of the Big Ten Conference regular-season title with the win, scored the game-winning goal at 64:30 on a rebound from the left post. Northwestern's Maddie Zimmer carried the ball into the circle from the right baseline and fed it in front. Sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein made the initial stop, but the rebound kicked left to Lauren Wadas, who banged it in behind Silverston.
Senior/junior Emmy Tran scored the equalizer late in the fourth quarter, at 54:40, off a Michigan penalty corner. Graduate student Kate McLaughlin inserted directly to senior/junior Abby Tamer on the left side of the arc. Tamer hammered a hard shot on the ground, and Tran laid out to tip high for her second career goal -- and first since 2021.
The game remained scoreless through halftime. The Wolverines (11-3, 4-2 Big Ten) controlled large swathes of the game, including most of the first and fourth quarters. The teams combined for just six shots in the first half before Northwestern broke the tie early in the third quarter, at 35:24, on a corner tip of its own. Zimmer fired a drag from the top of the arc, and Chloe Relford tipped it in from the right post.
Northwestern (16-0, 6-0 Big Ten) narrowly led in both shots 11-10 and corners 7-6.
Silverstein was spectacular in the Wolverine cage with six total saves, including a breakaway stop in the waning seconds of the first half and two off Northwestern corners with the scored tied late in the fourth quarter. NU goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz stopped seven of eight U-M shots on goal.
Michigan will close out the home portion of its regular-season slate on Sunday (Oct. 27) when it hosts Indiana at 1 p.m. at Ocker Field. The game will be streamed live on B1G+, and admission is free.
