ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Northwestern on Thursday evening (Oct. 17) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Northwestern (6-8-3, 1-6-2 Big Ten) took a 1-0 lead in the first half and tacked on a pair of second-half goals to put the contest out of reach for Michigan (2-12-2, 1-6-1 Big Ten). The Wildcats put up 10 shots in the contest, getting five on frame compared to nine shots and six on goal for Michigan.
NU struck in the 21st minute, converting a header in the box from a ball served in from the left side.
Michigan appeared to pull level with just three minutes left in the first half when Campbell Jewell's shot from the left side ricocheted off Beanie Harshe into the bottom right of the net. VAR after the goal found Michigan was offsides, negating the goal.
A spectacular save from Stephanie Sparkowski kept NU's lead to just one goal in the 48th minute but the Wildcats extended the lead a few minutes later. NU put its second goal on the board in the 52nd minute, taking advantage of a Michigan turnover in the backfield. The Wildcats officially put the game away in the 66th minute, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Michigan put two more shots on goal in the final 25 minutes but could not convert.
U-M will wrap up the home portion of its season on Sunday (Oct. 20), hosting Purdue at 1 p.m.
