ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team closed out the home portion of its season with a 2-0 win over Purdue on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 20) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines scored in the final minutes of both halves to secure the victory.
Goalkeepers Stephanie Sparkowski and Sophie Homan combined for the clean sheet, Michigan's second shutout of the season. Homan made three saves in 40 minutes, while Sparkowski did not face a shot in her 50 minutes of play. Purdue (7-8-2, 3-6-1 Big Ten) managed six shots, with three on frame in the second half. Michigan took eight shots, with four on goal.
Michigan (3-12-2, 2-7-1 Big Ten) had a great opportunity in the 28th minute, but a Beanie Harshe shot hit the crossbar, keeping the game scoreless. U-M finally broke through just before halftime when Harshe's touch found Campbell Jewell on the left side of the box. Jewell tapped it toward the bottom right corner. Though the Purdue goalkeeper got a hand on it, it was too late, as U-M took a 1-0 lead on Jewell's first career goal in the 44th minute.
Neither team created many chances early in the second half. Purdue's best opportunity came in the 60th minute, but Homan made the save to keep the shutout intact.
Michigan controlled much of the second-half play and added an insurance goal in the 89th minute, courtesy of Jenna Lang. Katie Roditis chased down the ball on the far sideline and passed it to Lang, who wove through the defense and scored her fifth goal of the season.
The Wolverines will wrap up their season next Sunday (Oct. 27) on the road against Wisconsin at 1 p.m. CDT.
