ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Alana Richardson used an overtime redirection to score the game-winning goal at 63:02 and propel the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 1-0 win over No. 18 Old Dominion on Sunday (Sept. 3) in front of 419 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. With the win, U-M completed a home weekend sweep and evened its season record.
Freshman Kelsey Reviello intercepted an errant ODU (1-2) pass near the 25 and fed the ball up the left side to fellow freshman Natalie Millman, who carried the ball into the circle and dished a reverse-stick pass under a defender's stick and to the middle. Alone in front, Richardson lunged to get her stick on the ball and redirected it into the lower-right corner of the cage.
It was Richardson's third goal of the week after she scored twice in U-M's home opener against UC Davis on Friday (Sept. 1). She has already matched her career-high goal tally; she posted three goals in both 2021 and 2022.
Michigan (2-2) outshot the Monarchs 12-3 and outcornered them 5-2. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon posted two saves -- both in the first half -- to earn the first complete-game shutout of her collegiate career. She previously contributed to four combined shutouts last season. ODU goalkeeper Suus Broers stopped seven of eight Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines will host two more home games next weekend, facing Davidson at 6 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 8) and Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 10) at Ocker Field. Admission is free, and both games will be streamed live on B1G+.
