ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored six goals in the second half and earned goals from seven different players en route to a 7-0 win over Davidson on Friday (Sept. 8) in front of 570 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' third straight win and second straight shutout.
Six Wolverines scored their first goal of the season with a pair of freshmen, Natalie Millman and Kelsey Reviello, both tallying the first of their collegiate careers. Millman scored U-M's first and game-winning goal at 24:12 midway through the second quarter. Fellow freshman Juliette Manzur put a shot on goal from the arc, and Millman got her stick on it in front of the Davidson (2-3) goalkeeper to tip it in.
Reviello scored Michigan's sixth goal of the game, at the 50:31 mark, on a direct corner shot that rocketed off the goalie and deflected high into the cage. Junior Alana Richardson and senior Lora Clarke earned assists on the stop and insert, respectively.
Michigan (3-2) tallied three goals in both the third and fourth quarters, including two within just a 32-second window in the former. Senior Pilar Oliveros scored on a direct corner shot at 35:03 before Clarke scored on a sweep shot from the stroke mark at 35:35 on a nice pass in front from Manzur. Clarke boasted a goal and three assists in the game as the Wolverines converted on four second-half penalty corners.
Senior Erin Reilly also scored on a direct corner shot at 41:59, while freshman Esmée de Willigen took advantage of the scrum in front following a Michigan penalty corner late, at 53:19, to score her second goal of the season. U-M worked the ball back to the inserter, Clarke, whose shot from the left post was blocked; she corralled it and fed it cross cage to de Willigen, who redirected it in from the right post.
Senior Kate McLaughlin rounded out Michigan's goal scorers with a slick goal in front early in the fourth quarter, at 46:03. Graduate student Isabella Palde carried the ball into the circle from the left side and shoveled a shot toward the goal; it hit the goalkeeper's pads and bounced to McLaughlin, who banged it into the cage.
Michigan outshot the Davidson 34-3 and boasted an 18-2 advantage in penalty corners. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon earned one save and combined for the shutout with senior Gillian Dumont. Davidson goalkeeper Cato Roell stopped nine of 16 Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines will wrap up their weekend homestand with a top-10 showdown against No. 10 Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 10) at Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
