COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped an overtime heartbreaker, 1-0, at No. 3 Maryland on Friday evening (Sept. 23) at the Terrapins' Lacrosse and Field Hockey Complex.

Maryland (8-1, 2-0 Big Ten) scored the game-winner on a penalty corner rebound at the 63:39 mark in overtime with the Wolverines shorthanded after a 10-minute yellow card late in regulation. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker made the initial save, but the rebound kicked right to Leah Crouse on the right side of the circle and the Terrapin pushed it in to the short side.

Maryland outshot the Wolverines 14-6 and outcornered them 8-0 pulling away in both categories in the second half. It was the first time in seven games that Michigan (4-4, 0-2 Big Ten) was outshot by its opponent. The Wolverines held a narrow 3-2 shot advantage at the halftime break and largely controlled the first several minutes of the third quarter until the Terps claimed momentum with a series of four corners -- though only once got a shot through to Spieker.

Spieker made four saves in the Wolverine cage, while Maryland goalkeeper Paige Kieft made one stop -- on a third-quarter reverse shot in front from senior Sarah Pyrtek as she went to the turf.

The Wolverines will wrap their weekend road trip with a noon slate at No. 19 Rutgers on Sunday (Sept. 25) at the Bauer Track and Field Complex in Piscataway, N.J. It will be streamed live on B1G+.
